The installation, which resembles a merry-go-round, rotates on a fixed central axis, with 10 empty chairs inviting the public to take part in a gathering.
These chairs are design pieces which are characteristic of office furnishings, with vibrant fabrics. An industrial carpet covers the floor, emphasising the reference to executive offices. Crossing these references - the office environment and playground and playfulness - this artwork changes the significance of these elements, thus subverting them. By breaking down boundaries between the discourses and operations of intersection and commutation that life and art indifferently suggest.
Movement in Ponto de Encontro [Meeting Point] is achieved through an ongoing organisation between the participants who occupy the chairs - it demands an orchestrated effort, and a moment of decision-making about which direction to take. This creates a need for dialogue and coordination.
Ponto de Encontro [Meeting Point] is an allegory of Joana Vasconcelos' method of creation. At the Studio, work is carried out by teamwork, where individual knowledge and experiences generate opportunities for dialogue which create value for the whole. The call to play constitutes a good-humoured interaction that simultaneously prompts reflection on companionship and teamwork, both of which Vasconcelos sees as key values in these times haunted by individualism.
