Flowers of My Desire

Vasconcelos’s sophisticated use of elements from the domestic sphere such as tampons, saucepans, and cutlery is a common feature in her artistic production. In Flowers of My Desire, lilac feather dusters have been transformed into an art installation suggesting, more than anything, an alternative collapsible bed. By using an archetypical female object such as a feather duster and decontextualising it, Vasconcelos leaves us in some doubt: should our focus be on the pleasant and glamorous interior with the organic shapes accentuated by soft lilac feathers? Or is it perhaps the hostile back side of the artwork with its ominously protruding handles that define the theme of this installation? As the title Flowers of My Desire indicates, desire and the position of women in the home are just as complex and contradictory as the relationship between outer practical chores and inner sexual fantasies.
