XIII Mostra Portuguesa
Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain
26/11/2015 > 24/01/2016
The programme for MOSTRA PORTUGUESA 2015 was designed to present a complete and comprehensive picture of Portugal's cultural reality within the cultural and creative industries. Multiple events were held- music (and, within this, in genres as diverse as classical, pop/rock, popular and fado), cinema, theatre, literature, visual arts, photography and design.
Joana Vasconcelos presented Strangers in the Night (2000).
This piece continuously plays, and takes its title from, a Frank Sinatra song, Strangers in the Night. While the reality of fleeting love is the theme that triggers the song, the final conquest of a lasting love counteracts this negative idea. The piece, however, reinforces the critical side of the theme, evoking the interior décor of a capitone white nappa leather cabin, open to the viewer, and with the outside of the cabin lined with flashing car lights.
