Enchanted Forest, a site-specific artwork by Joana Vasconcelos, invites viewers into an ethereal realm where art and imagination transcend the boundaries of time and space. Debuting at ArtisTree, this large-scale installation unfolds within a darkened setting, its intricate sculptural forms brought to life by a mesmerizing interplay of LED lights. The result is a kaleidoscopic landscape of infinite wonder, where visitors seamlessly merge with the artwork, free from physical barriers, becoming part of the immersive experience.
Conceived for Vasconcelos' exhibition in Hong Kong, Enchanted Forest reimagines a city's urban landscape as a forest of contemporary concrete trees. By night, these structures awaken under a glow of countless lights, echoing the vitality and enchantment of the natural world. Drawing parallels between the urban and organic, Vasconcelos transforms the rigid and industrial into something vibrant and alive.
In collaboration with a team of artisans and spanning six months of meticulous work, Vasconcelos integrated Dior fabrics with techniques traditionally associated with the feminine realm, such as sewing, knitting, and crochet. This approach not only connects the piece to her broader body of work but also monumentalizes the artistry of domestic crafts, challenging conventional perceptions of women's roles in society.
With Enchanted Forest, Vasconcelos creates a transcendent space—a glowing sanctuary where art, craft, and community intersect. The artwork stands as a testament to the power of imagination to reshape and re-envision the world, inviting all who enter to see the extraordinary within the everyday.
