Chairs

About 'Pimple' - whose title refers to colourful little crochet blobs that dot it - is Joana Vasconcelos' answer to a challenge from Máxima Interiores magazine. For its 10th anniversary, the publication challenged a group of creatives to design wooden chairs. Based on this prompt, the Portuguese artist opted, to counterpoint the orthogonality of this object by evoking the organic style that characterises all her work. Joana Vasconcelos transforms, adulterates and makes this chair's primary function impossible. Its playful appearance notwithstanding, the chair is impossible to use. Introducing a series of textile elements into this ordinary furniture item that modify its original shape, texture and colour, changes its significance and adds a new, more sculptural dimension. This is a recurring practice in the work of an artist who, over the course of almost 30 years, has recreated symbols, challenged stereotypes and signalled the creative potency of various items of utilitarian nature. Produced in 2008, Pimple is the inaugural piece in the Cadeiras series and brings together a large part of the aesthetic vocabulary that we see mirrored in more recent works.
