The sculpture "l'Il Be Your Mirror #1, 2018" by the artist Joana Vasconcelos was inaugurated today at the Praça do Comércio in Braga. In a play on the role of the artist in society, Joana Vasconcelos has created a game of disguise. By means of 255 baroque bronze mouldings (designed and decorated by the artist herself) and 510 mirrors that are superimposed on each other as if they were scales, she creates a surprising Venetian mask. She establishes a dialogue with the reflection of her surroundings through a sculptural work that adapts to both indoor and outdoor spaces. The audience, wishing to have its reflection returned to it, is invited to discover that "there is only a reflection when there is a parallel", as the artist declares. The title is taken from the song of the same name, composed by Lou Reed and performed by the Velvet Underground and singer Nico. It was also the theme of her solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Bilbao.
