Given the carte blanche by lille3000, Joana Vasconcelos not only gathered a selection of works for the exhibition at Maison Folie Wazemmes - which took its title from her work Garden of Eden - but also worked on two large-scale Valkyries. The first, to be debuted with a choreographic performance by a group of youths, engages in dialogue with the local community. The second one will welcome all travellers arriving at Gare Lille-Flandres. Utopia offers a great opportunity to address a topic close to the artist's heart: sustainability.
In this historic moment, it is impossible to imagine a future without addressing the issue of the planet's sustainability, the way we deal with resources such as water or energy production, as well as our relationship with animals. This thought is reflected in the eco-responsible edition of lille3000 and in the works Menu do Dia, A Todo o Vapor, Purple Rain, Inséparables, Fonte dos Amores and A Barroca. Also with Ostfriesland, the artist continues her practice of decontextualising domestic objects to create a bridge between private and public space, between popular traditions and high culture. As if to summon us to intervene fearlessly, from our personal actions, in the global community.
