01/05/2024>03/11/2024

Eleven artworks - including Valkyrie Marina Rinaldi (2014) Valkyrie Martha (2022) and Valkyrie Thyra (2023) - are on display on Gottorf Museum Island, in the Castle, the Kreuzstall and the arena, as well as in the inner courtyard of the Eisenkunstgussmuseum in Büdelsdorf. With a wide range of parallel activities, suitable for all audiences. From crochet workshops developed by Paper Tube Studios, touch sessions where participants get to know Joana Vasconcelos' work by touch, to the presentation of the choreography that accompanies Valkyrie Martha, developed by Eva Vieira de Almeida and performed by the Mahatma Dance School. This crossing of artistic disciplines is a demonstration of the interplay between the visual arts and adjacent realms, in the largest exhibition of Joana Vasconcelos's work to date, in Germany. Le Château des Valkyries exhibition attracted 45,658 visitors, making it the most successful exhibition held at Gottorf Castle in the past 25 years. It surpassed the popularity of previous exhibitions featuring renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Emil Nolde, and Niki de Saint Phalle. The exhibition booklet is available to download here.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Portuguese Ambassador to Germany, His Excellency Francisco Ribeiro de Menezes. ‘Joana Vasconcelos. The Castle of the Valkyries’ is sponsored by Freundeskreis Schloss Gottorf e.V, ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, Kulturstiftung des Landes Schleswig-Holstein, Sparkassen in Schleswig-Holstein, the Portuguese Embassy and the French furniture brand Roche Bobois.
