Gardes, 2012
Port Laurent marble (Pakistan) lions and bases, Azores crocheted lace

(2x) 200 x 65 x 110 cm

Georges Marci Collection, Gstaad

Side by side, like sentries marking a doorway, two proud lions sitting on plinths exhibit their robust bodies carved in black marble. Gardes uses the skilled manipulation of opposites - power/subservience; strength/fragility; robustness/delicacy; imprisonment/protection; solar/lunar - in order to subvert the logics of referenciation to which they would be subjected. The short-circuited polarities have thus detonated the edifice of fake superiority; still today, the legitimating argumentation of dominance and inequality between genders.
